APhA Backs MTM Bill

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) has rallied behind the “Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Expanded Benefits Act of 2010”. Introduced by Senators Kay Hagan (D-NC) and Al Franken (D-MN), the bill seeks to expand MTM to specific Medicare patients. Those with chronic illnesses would be eligible for a medication review and consultations with a pharmacist to monitor their progress. The goal is to increase availability of MTM services and to target those who might be transitioning from a hospital or care facility setting back to a home environment.

The APhA has long been touting the benefits of MTM. Studies show that it reduces costs for insurance companies and individuals who take part in the programs. The benefits of having pharmacists working closely with physicians and medical teams also include: improved outcomes, fewer medical errors, fewer adverse drug responses, and improved quality of life for patients. The APhA is hopeful that the new bill will encourage these benefits for Medicare patients, and illustrate the necessity of pharmacist involvement in helping to manage chronic illnesses.
