APhA Lauches MTM Program for Employees

  • RPh on the Go

The American Pharmacists Association has partnered with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan to offer its employees enrollment in a medication therapy management (MTM) plan as part of its health coverage. APhA has been campaigning to increase the role of pharmacists in the health care process through the use of MTM. The current plan seeks to provide employees with the use of MTM while increasing awareness of its benefits.

APhA employees will have an initial phone meeting with a Kaiser pharmacist that will include a comprehensive medication review. If the pharmacist determines that additional follow up is required, based on the medical history and current medication usage of the employee, additional services will be scheduled. The outcomes will also be recorded in Kaiser’s electronic record system to allow treating physicians access to the MTM records. In addition to being beneficial for employees, MTM studies also indicate that greater understanding of and adherence to medication regimens helps reduce overall health care costs. The APhA and Kaiser have stated that the plan will also include detailed analysis to track the potential cost benefits of the program.
