Inpatient Staff Pharmacist in Wausau, WI
A skilled pharmacist is needed to support a rehabilitation hospital with 30 staffed beds and an average daily census of 28 patients. This role offers a contract-to-hire opportunity, with an initial focus on weekday evening coverage and potential for full-time placement if the match is ideal.
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- Primary hours 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM (negotiable)
- Weekend, after-hours, and on-call duties shared with pharmacy management
Pharmacy Environment:
- Small, dedicated team including 2 pharmacists and 1 technician
- Utilize Wellsky hospital pharmacy information system
- Work with Pyxis automation system
- Focus on inpatient medication management in a rehab setting
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, verify, and dispense medication orders accurately, including sterile IV compounding (non-chemotherapy)
- Monitor patient therapies, recommend clinical interventions, and adjust medication based on laboratory results
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care
- Ensure compliance with all hospital policies and regulatory requirements
- Provide drug information and counseling to staff and patients
- Supervise pharmacy technicians and support staff
- Maintain accurate documentation for all pharmacy interventions
- Manage inventory and controlled substances securely
- Lead medication safety initiatives and participate in quality assurance activities
- Stay current on evolving pharmacy guidelines and clinical best practices
Qualifications:
- Active, clear Wisconsin pharmacist license
- Experience with inpatient hospital pharmacy practice, including limited IV compounding
- Strong clinical and communication skills to interact with multidisciplinary teams
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to patient safety and regulatory compliance
